WALKING

Glengarry is within easy reach of the Kamberg,
Giant's Castle, and Highmoor Nature Reserves.
For the stout hearted, there are many trails across the top of the
Drakensberg, but we must stress that these are not for the amateur. Proper
planning and equipment is an absolute necessity, and any long or overnight
trails must be logged with the local Parks Board officers.
On the other hand there are many pleasant family walks in the reserves
ranging from 30 minutes to 4 hours.
Closer to home, in fact, right on your doorstep, you can explore Glengarry's
grounds, follow the ever winding Little Mooi, and enjoy the birdlife. The local
farmers are a friendly crowd but they naturally like to know who is on their
land. We are more than happy to make arrangements for you.
Thunder Storms
A Thunder Storm may, literally, appear "out of the blue", very quickly,
particularly in the Summer months in the late afternoon. Walkers are always
advised to carry lightweight waterproof clothing.
Lightning invariably accompanies the storm, and should be treated with
respect. Horse riders should dismount.
You should keep clear of high ground, single trees, telephone poles, and fence
posts. It is relatively safe to shelter in a group of trees, particularly if they are Pines.
Relax, the
storms are usually shortlived, and it's an truly awe inspiring experience!
Bushmen Paintings
The Khoi-san or San people (popularly known as Bushmen) were more than likely
the first inhabitants of this area. It is thought that they go back at least
8,000 years. Sadly the last local sighting was around 1890. The Natal
Drakensberg has about 35% of all rock paintings in South Africa, some of which
are the finest in the world.
The Giant's Castle Reserve has a well known Bushman exhibition which is well
worth visiting. Having done that, you can go off and find your own. Talk to us
and we'll point you in the right direction. On the road to Highmoor, a short
scramble off the road, and there you are - paintings for you to view in
peace, far from the madding crowd. Add to the experience by cooling off in
the nearby stream. (In the Winter months we only recommend this to masochists
and Polar Bears.)
This is a lovely part of the
World. Please help us to look after it.
